Australian born, UK superstar and international gay, fashion, pop icon, Kylie Minogue has cemented herself as one of the most successful pop acts of the last twenty years. Although she finally toured the US for the first time last year and now being in her 40s, one could think her success would allow her to take it all in, Kylie is still a struggling diva.
That is an observation, not an insult.
As others acts have achieved overnight success, Minogue has lasted this long because there are still things for her to achieve. Although she’s considered to be Pop’s Princess (after Madonna), she is the type of artist that has to work hard for what she conquers. That’s a quality that makes her both endearing and empowering.
Minogue’s last single release was 2008’s “The One”. The track barely cracked the top 10 in Australia, and became a dull top 40 hit in the UK. Her last US single “All I See” was a flop (hitting #3 on the dance charts but not even touching the Hot 100), just like her last studio album X, which hit #139 (thanks to a five-month delay from the UK release).
To think of happier times, one would have to turn back time, and look at her biggest breakthrough, 2001’s Fever. The album spawned the worldwide hit “Can’t Get You Out of My Head”, which was her real last hit in the US hitting #7 (“Love at First Sight” peaked at #23).
Essentially, Kylie hasn’t been relevant in the US since the beginning of last decade. Now, roughly eight years after, Kylie will try to charm her longtime fans and surely give the US market another try.
The new single “All the Lovers” will be released overseas on June 28th, a month after the singer’s 42nd birthday. The song will be taken from her new album Aphrodite, more on that here.
Don’t miss Kylie’s label mates: Goldfrapp live in NYC on June 23rd, and Korn (as part of The Rocker Mayhem Festival) also featuring Rob Zombie live in VA Beach on August 4th.
